Last week we had open house on our campus. I was looking for some ideas to get involved since i see the entire school. i wasn't sure if any or all my students would show, so i ran through a few ideas. i considered making a music advocacy movie on iMovie to try and get parents to understand how important music is for their kids. i played with the idea of presenting and explaining classdojo- my classroom management system. finally, i found a neat idea online about transforming the music room into a "instrument petting zoo". the idea is to get kids and parents to go through the music room trying out different types of instruments to hear what they sound like. i know to some it might seem scary to let kids roam free touching this or that-but i had a talk with each parent that brought their child into my room about being gentle with the instruments. it seemed to work out pretty well in spite of the noise level. for me, the most interesting part of the evening was when i had students leave their parents in their classrooms to come to the music room. most just sat by my piano and talked or offered to help re-organize the instruments once families were through. Miss ReynaI grew up in Brownsville, TX and graduated from Homer Hanna High School. I have loved singing ever since I joined choir in 5th grade. After years of singing in choir, my hard work payed off with a scholarship to the University of Texas at Brownsville. I graduated in Spring 2012 with a Bachelor’s in Music Education EC-12, with an emphasis in Voice.I am a fully certified Kodaly teacher and looking to get my second certification in the Orff-Schulwerk process.
