this week in music-we are learning about dr. martin luther king' jr.-his life and accomplishments. 5th grade students are singing an upbeat song out of our spotlight in music songbooks. A lot of them love the simple melody with the upbeat accompaniment. by the end of music they are humming the tune and walking out happy! I try to incorporate reading as often as I can in music and I found an easy game that asks student to read and spell various words associated with the civil rights movement. Here are some examples: freedom, peaceful, rights, marches. After we sing our song, we use the iPads to watch a short brain pop video. It goes into more specifics about Dr. King's life. It also mentions Rosa Parks and her contribution to the civil rights movement. If your school has an account-I highly suggest it!

Miss ReynaI grew up in Brownsville, TX and graduated from Homer Hanna High School. I have loved singing ever since I joined choir in 5th grade. After years of singing in choir, my hard work payed off with a scholarship to the University of Texas at Brownsville. I graduated in Spring 2012 with a Bachelor’s in Music Education EC-12, with an emphasis in Voice.I am a fully certified Kodaly teacher and looking to get my second certification in the Orff-Schulwerk process. I am qualified to teach all music to all grades (K-12) but I love the elementary level. Archives
